5e to 5.5e Transition Rules

The following will be the Guiding Standard when it comes to 5e-5.5e Rule Interactions and PC Transitions.

  1. Frontier Guides (DM) have the final say.
  2. Unless stated otherwise we are using the D&D 5.5e ruleset for all characters as well as including, but not limited to 5.5e Equipment, Magic Items, Spells, etc.
  3. 5e Player Characters are still playable, but may only use 5e Character Options. See the Character Creation Rules for more information.
  4. Objections or changes will be dealt with on a case by case basis, final decisions will ultimately be up to the Guides (see Rule 1).

Transitions and Making a Character

Transitioning your Player Character is not Mandatory.

Transitioning a Player Character means that an existing 5e Frontier character is changing, as far as mechanically possible, to 5.5e. This means and generally starts with taking the same class, subclass, species and background as the original character and rebuilding, as close as possible, a replica of the original character.

In some cases, due to 5.5e initial ASI restrictions and other new rules/mechanics some features available to 5e characters will not be the same or available as a 5.5e character. To help smooth the transition process, you are allowed to change the background of your Player Character to one that better fits the feel or mechanics of the original character.

Transitioning is not a free re-spec of a player character. It does not allow you to swap or drastically change your original character's class, subclass, or species. If transitioning a player character does not fulfill your original vision of the character, then you do not need to transition and may continue to play that PC in its 5e version.

Permanent Change

Once a player character is transitioned it is a permanent change and the original player character is no longer allowed, without prior Guide review.

Player Character Transition Rollback — aka Rollback

So, you want to transition your 5e character to 5.5e, but you're concerned you won't enjoy the new features as much. You now have the option to rollback your character, but it will require some planning ahead on your part.

  1. Before you transition your character you must declare to a Guide that you would like to have the option to rollback your transitioned character to 5e 2014 rules.
  2. You must then submit a current non-transitioned 5e version of your character sheet before starting the process of transitioning to 5.5e.
  3. You have 2 sessions to decide if you would like to continue with your new 5.5e character build or rollback your transitioned character to your 5e version.
