Notes on Custom Backgrounds

5e Customized Background

Customized backgrounds are available for use in the Frontier. Allowing you to choose a background, swap its background's feature, choose any two skills, and choose a total of two tool proficiencies or languages from the sample backgrounds. You may choose to take the original background's starting equipment. [found in the PHB14 → Ch.4 under Customizing Backgrounds].

5.5e Custom Background

Customized Backgrounds are available for use in the Frontier. This allows you to choose which Ability Scores gain an Increase (+2/+1 or +1/+1/+1), choose an origin feat, choose two skills and a tool proficiency, and receive 50 gp. [Described in the DMG24 → Ch 3 and the PHB24 → Ch 2 & 4].

Consult a Guide

It is highly recommended that any customized content be consulted on by a Hungry Frontier Guide.

Converting a 5e Background into 5.5e

"Backgrounds in older D&D books don't include ability score adjustments. If you're using a background from an older book, adjust your ability scores by increasing one score by 2 and a different one by 1, or increase three scores by 1. None of these increases can raise a score above 20."

"Also, if the background you choose doesn't provide a feat, you gain an Origin feat of your choice."

As described in the PHB24 → Ch 2.
